Tottenham to battle Liverpool for German starlet

Tottenham Hotspur are set to battle fellow Premier League rivals Liverpool to secure the signing of Schalke 04 starlet Max Meyer, according to the Daily Mirror.

The 21-year-old – who is out of contract at the end of next season, attracted attention from Reds boss Jurgen Klopp during the 49-year-old’s time at Borussia Dortmund, but it is thought Spurs’ Mauricio Pochettino is now also monitoring the creative midfielder.

The promising youngster – who can also play as a forward, has come under fire from the Royal Blues manager Markus Wienzierl recently, and has admitted negotiations for a new deal between the club’s hierarchy and his representatives have stalled.

“There have been no further talks”, the Germany Under-21 international captain told ZDF.

The once dubbed “future of German football” by Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola went on to state that what lies ahead for him is still undecided – after being asked if he would like to remain a Schalke player.

“Why not? I can imagine both. The odds are 50-50”, Meyer added.

It is expected that the current ninth sitters of the Bundesliga will have to cut costs if they do not qualify for Europe this season, and the dynamic starlet could well be one to leave the Veltins Arena with Premier League clubs circling.
