Alderweireld speaks out about his immediate Tottenham future

Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld has stated that he will return to the club this weekend, amid speculation over the player’s future.

The Belgian defender is a fans’ favourite at Spurs but talks over a contract extension have broken down between the player and the club’s hierarchy.

Speculation in the press has linked Alderweireld with a Tottenham exit this summer, in what would be a sad piece of news for the supporters.

However, there has been no updates on the Belgian’s contract situation or over a potential transfer since the end of the World Cup last month.

Alderweireld has stated that he is ready to return to Tottenham and will focus on his physical condition in the immediate future.

“This weekend I am just going back to London because then the preparation starts at my club,” the Spurs man told HLN.

”I have been working on my condition for a while because I want to be as fit as I can be.”

Should the transfer window close without anything happening, it will be interesting to see whether Mauricio Pochettino plays Alderweireld once he is fit, or opts for alternatives.

The Belgian was frozen out slightly last season once he returned from a hamstring injury and it became clear that a new contract would not be agreed upon.

However, regardless of whether Alderweireld pens a new deal or not, Tottenham are a stronger team with the 28-year-old in it and keeping him in North London, one way or the other, would be a positive for the club.
