Ben Davies admits he is happy at new Tottenham role

Tottenham Hotspur defender Ben Davies has admitted that he is very much relishing the left wing-back role he has been handed by Mauricio Pochettino.

Since Davies signed for Spurs in 2014 he has often played second fiddle to England international Danny Rose.

However, the former Leeds United man’s medial knee ligament injury has seen the full-back given a chance in his absence.

With Rose out until April, Davies has since signed a new four-year contract at the club and is continuing to shine for the North London outfit.

Spurs’ excellent form recently has seen both full-backs transformed into wing-backs – a role that the Welshman is relishing.

“It’s part and parcel of the position, trying to get forward and trying to help the team score goals,” Davies told the club’s official website.

“That’s what you want to be part of at the end of the day.”

Davies’ position change is very new to him, with the 23-year-old used to operating as a more traditional left-back, or in a back three for Wales.

“I’ve always said that defending is first and foremost for me but it’s a nice little change,” he continued.

“It’s a lot of running – that’s what me and Trips (Kieran Trippier) had to do on Sunday (against Millwall) and what we’ve had to with Kyle Walker over the last couple of weeks but in the end it’s always lovely to get a win.”

Since coming into the starting XI in January, Davies has seen Spurs lose only one Premier League game and is enjoying his time helping his side succeed.

Such attacking responsibilities come with the consequences of fatigue however this doesn’t seem to bother the defender.

“It’s hard work but it’s what you want to do as a footballer, to get as much of the ball as you can out there,” Davies said.

“You do see it a lot (of fatigue) and it’s hard work but it’s great and I certainly can’t complain.

“With every match that’s going by it’s another 90 minutes under my belt so it’s great, especially when we’re winning games like this.”
