While plenty of Tottenham Hotspur’s transfer business in the last decade has resulted in new faces that would ultimately fail, Spurs have a better track record in recent times of signing the right players.
A switch in focus has seen Mauricio Pochettino look to young recruits with potential that he can mould into stars with Premier League and international quality.
Dele Alli’s acquisition from MK Dons has been coined over and over again as Tottenham’s best piece of transfer business of the modern era – and rightly so.
Spurs took a chance on a young Football League midfielder with promise and now have a world-class international star in their starting line-up.
However, in light of Tony Adams’ comments this week, Tottenham’s acquisition of Eric Dier from Sporting Lisbon in 2014 should also be highlighted as a marvellous piece of business by Daniel Levy and the Spurs power brokers.
Despite being recommended to Arsenal by Adams, the Gunners overlooked the now England international while Tottenham’s judgement proved to be spot on.
A £4 million fee to land Dier was small change in the current market, with the 23-year-old now worth ten times that.
With the recruitment drive ahead of next season already underway, Spurs fans will hope the club can unearth another gem or two to bolster Pochettino’s ranks.
Dier? Worth £40M?
He’s a lump. Ponderous to near-lackadaisical.
Though he might be played further forward.
Did you see that beautiful through ball he made to Salah for Pool’s first on Saturday?
