Final stretch: Can De Zerbi save Tottenham from epic embarrassment?

Tottenham Hotspur are teetering just above the Premier League relegation zone with seven Tottenham fixtures remaining, facing serious danger of falling into the league’s basement places.

Spurs entered the international break only a point clear of the bottom three despite a humiliating 3-0 home loss to fellow survival rivals Nottingham Forest in Igor Tudor’s last game in charge.

Unfortunately, the former Juventus boss failed to steer the struggling North London side back on track, and it will now be up to newly appointed Roberto De Zerbi to steady the ship.

As pointed out by the 45-year-old in his first press conference in the capital, Tottenham ‘must play with courage’ if they are to avoid the ignominy of being relegated from the top flight for the first time since the 1970s.

With the Premier League hitting a pause button this weekend to accommodate the FA Cup quarter-finals, De Zerbi has a valuable opportunity to work with his squad and begin implementing his ideas ahead of a crucial run-in.

There will be little margin for error when last season’s UEFA Europa League winners take on Sunderland in their first outing under the Italian tactician next weekend, as we look at Spurs’ remaining league fixtures.

Sunderland (A) – 12/04/2026

Sitting comfortably in mid-table, Sunderland have already staved off relegation fears, but they are still hoping to make a late push for an unlikely European spot, as they trail fifth-placed Liverpool by only six points.

Despite holding Tottenham to a 1-1 draw in January’s reverse fixture, Regis Le Bris’ men are now winless in their last 15 meetings with Spurs, which bodes well ahead of De Zerbi’s touchline debut.

However, the Black Cats and Tottenham have shared the spoils in two of their last three clashes at the Stadium of Light, meaning the visitors’ first league win since Boxing Day is far from a foregone conclusion.

Nevertheless, this feels like a decent opportunity for the Londoners to halt their dismal 13-game winless streak in the Premier League (D5, L8) ahead of Brighton & Hove Albion’s visit to North London.

Brighton & Hove Albion (H) – 18/04/2026

De Zerbi must keep his emotions in check against his former club if he is to restore Tottenham’s home fortress, with Spurs lamenting the first home record in England’s top flight this term.

No team has picked up fewer home points than Spurs’ ten so far this season. A lacklustre average of 0.62 points per home league game is one of the reasons why they have to fight for survival down the final stretch.

Furthermore, Forest’s remarkable victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium condemned De Zerbi’s underperforming side to their fourth consecutive home league defeat.

In addition to their second-longest winless league run in their history, Spurs are currently on an eight-game winless home streak in the Premier League. It’s also worth noting that they’ve only won two of their 16 home league matches this season.

Wolverhampton Wanderers (A) – 25/04/2026

A trip to the Midlands to take on relegation-bound Wolverhampton Wanderers has all the makings of a ‘must-win’ affair for the two-time English champions, even though a quick look at recent Tottenham results shows that they haven’t won a league game outside London since late October.

However, Tottenham would be naive to underestimate the Wanderers, who headed into the break on a three-game unbeaten run (W2, D1), securing more wins in their last three league matches than they had in their previous 28 combined.

Molineux has not been a happy hunting ground for Spurs lately, given that they’ve lost their last three away encounters against Wolves, including a chastening 4-2 defeat in April 2025.

Aston Villa (A) – 02/05/2026

Another ominous trip to the Midlands arrives only a week later, as De Zerbi’s men lock horns with top-four hopefuls Aston Villa in Birmingham, seeking revenge for October’s 2-1 loss on home turf.

Villa bounced back from a three-match losing league streak just before the break with a 2-0 home win over Spurs’ relegation rivals West Ham United, steering five points clear of Liverpool.

Moreover, Unai Emery’s side should be confident of grabbing another home victory here, having defeated Tottenham in three of their last four competitive meetings at Villa Park (L1).

Whether De Zerbi could change that narrative remains to be seen, but Spurs will need a significant improvement to come away with a positive result.

Leeds United (H) – 11/05/2026

With only three points separating 17th-placed Tottenham and 15th-placed Leeds United, this showdown is a textbook definition of a ‘relegation six-pointer.’

Like Spurs, Daniel Farke’s men have been up the creek without a paddle in the second half of the season, picking up just one win in their last nine league outings (D5, L3).

There’s another promising sign for the London outfit ahead of this ‘make or break’ clash, as they’ve emerged victorious from their last six home matches against the Whites in the Premier League.

On that basis, Tottenham may view this as a golden opportunity to boost their survival quest.

Chelsea (A) – 17/05/2026

Beating Leeds would set Spurs up perfectly for a mouth-watering London derby at Stamford Bridge, where their last Premier League victory over Chelsea came back in April 2018.

Luckily for De Zerbi’s team, the Blues have been out of form lately, losing three of their last four league games, which could potentially open the door for Tottenham to break their seven-match winless run in West London.

Given the circumstances, even a point from this heavyweight fixture may prove precious, especially when factoring in West Ham’s brutal schedule in the final stage of the season.

This all-London clash is likely to be the featured TV fixture on the penultimate weekend, and fans unable to watch the game live will be able to follow Tottenham live scores and match highlights online.

Everton (H) – 24/05/2026

Tottenham’s season ends at home to Everton, a side they humbled 3-0 in the reverse fixture to claim one of their five away wins this term.

As a result, Spurs have a chance to complete their first league double over the Toffees since 2017/18, and it may well be a necessity if other results don’t go their way.

However, David Moyes’ charges are no idle threat, as most recently witnessed by their emphatic 3-0 home win over Chelsea before the break.
