Forget Thomas Lemar: Tottenham should sign his Monaco team-mate

The transfer silly season is in full swing and Tottenham Hotspur, as always, are at the core of plenty of speculation.

It is vitally important that Mauricio Pochettino gets his summer recruitment right, with Spurs needing a couple of shrewd acquisitions to win some silverware next season and be competitive in the Champions League.

Monaco, who played a role in Tottenham’s elimination from the European competition last season, is a hotbed of talent and a host of their young stars are being linked with moves elsewhere.

I have covered why Djibril Sidibe would be an ideal new right-back for Spurs should Kyle Walker leave, while Thomas Lemar is another man that is being touted as a Pochettino target.

While the winger is a gifted attacker and has been called up to the France national side as a result, his midfield counterpart Fabinho would be a much-better signing.

The Brazil international is the beating heart of Monaco’s possession play, similar to how Mousa Dembele dictates the pace and direction for Tottenham.

Fabinho’s poise on the ball and footballing intelligence are second to none, with the South American sure to be a man in demand this summer.

His versatility would also make him an attractive option for Pochettino, with the former Rio Ave man having played a lot of football at right-back.

As such, instead of signing Sidibe and Lemar for the majority of the club’s transfer budget, Tottenham should look to land the Brazilian instead as he can cover both midfield and right-back with confidence.
