Tottenham Hotspur are preparing for a clear-out this summer as the club bids to turn its fortunes around ahead of next season.
The Spurs roster needs quality, and the club must also let go of some players who are surplus to requirements.
Tottenham have been dreadful at the back this term, with the rearguard guilty of giving away cheap goals. Spurs could use a makeover in defence.
The North Londoners need reliable centre-backs after injuries blighted the first-choice pairing of Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero. The latter is also reportedly wanted in Spain.
Romero has now hinted that he is open to the move following an interview shared by Argentine journalist Gaston Edul.
“We (Spurs) are in the Europa League semi-finals, and I want to finish the season in the best possible way,” Romero said. “After that, we will see. My mindset is always to grow and look for new places where I can keep improving.”
When asked which league he would like to play in that he hasn’t yet? The Tottenham defender replied, “I am missing Spain to have competed in all the top leagues.”
Romero reportedly has interest from Atletico Madrid, where countryman Diego Simeone remains keen on his signature. He has also been linked with a move to Real Madrid.
Spurs should cash in on Romero – View
Romero’s performances this season have not been up to standard. When he was not on the treatment table, he was often part of a disjointed Spurs backline that could not stop leaking goals.
Tottenham needed leaders at the back. What they got from Romero was inconsistency, recklessness, and now distraction.
His latest comments are telling. Instead of showing commitment to Spurs and the long-term project, he is flirting with a move to Spain.
Frankly, let him go. If Romero sees his future in La Liga, Tottenham should cash in and reinvest in defenders who can stay fit, stay focused, and actually defend.
The rebuild must be ruthless. That means cutting ties with players like Romero.
