Former Tottenham Hotspur central midfielder turned pundit Jamie O’Hara has ripped into his former employers following Wednesday’s UEFA Super Cup defeat.
After beating Manchester United to clinch the Europa League title in Bilbao, Tottenham set up a much-anticipated date with Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain.
Thomas Frank’s side broke the deadlock in the 39th minute when Micky van de Ven poked home a rebound from point-blank range.
Newly appointed Tottenham skipper Cristian Romero doubled their lead just before half-time with a header that many would argue should have been kept out by new PSG keeper Lucas Chevalier.
For 85 minutes, Frank was on his way to making a huge statement by helping Spurs land another European trophy in his competitive debut.
However, he was forced to watch on helplessly from the touchline as his side capitulated in the final five minutes of the game.
Kang-in Lee gave the French champions a lifeline before Goncalo Ramos landed a second blow deep into stoppage time. PSG then went on to win the penalty shoot-out.
O’Hara sends strong warning to Tottenham
O’Hara has sent a strong warning to Frank and his troops that they must shift from their ‘Spursy’ mentality as they prepare for the new season.
“We won the Europa League and everyone would say ‘that’s it, Spursy’s dead’,” O’Hara said on Sky Sports. “But when you come back, there’s a massive game and we’re playing against PSG.
“We were on top, and you throw it away in the last five minutes, it is Spursy. You can’t get away from it, and that is a mentality that [Spurs] need to be better at.
“There has to be a mentality shift at Tottenham from last season, when it was shocking in the Premier League. You can’t go into a PSG game, play the way [Spurs] did and not take anything from it.”
Van de Ven and Tel missed their spot-kicks, which drew racial abuse from social media aimed at the latter.
However, Tottenham have strongly condemned the incident and pledged to take the strongest possible action against the culprits once they’re rooted out.
