Kevin Danso heaps praise on academy talent after Tottenham debut vs Dortmund

Tottenham Hotspur claimed a crucial 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund to boost their hopes of finishing in the Champions League top eight and sealing automatic qualification to the knockout rounds.

First-half goals from Cristian Romero and Dominic Solanke on either side of a red card for Dortmund’s Daniel Svensson got Tottenham over the line.

However, one player who stood out from the victory was academy talent Jun’ai Byfield.

The 17-year-old centre-back made his Champions League debut for Tottenham after coming on for the injured Lucas Bergvall for the final half an hour of the contest.

Spurs were dealing with serious squad problems heading into the game, with 13 players unavailable, mostly due to injuries. But they dug in and got the result.

Despite being on the pitch for just 30 minutes, Byfield’s performance caught the eye, drawing praise from teammate Kevin Danso.

“He’s been amazing,” Danso told Football.London. “He trains with us a lot, and he’s a very, very, very, very good player. Everybody was happy for him today to make his debut, and he did an amazing job.

Under-fire manager Thomas Frank also showered praise on the teenager, highlighting his composure in a high-stakes, must-win contest.

“Jun’ai has impressed throughout the training,” Frank said. “The players trust him. Clearly they rate him highly. I rate him highly. He just came in, composed, calm, on top of this.

“Wow. I hope his parents are very proud. They should be.”

Byfield’s performance spells trouble for Radu Dragusin

Byfield helped Tottenham see off Dortmund with a commanding display. He’s naturally a centre-back but asked to play at right-back, allowing Pedro Porro to move into midfield.

Despite being played out of position against a strong Dortmund side, Byfield handled the task with confidence and maturity and hardly looked out of place.

He was calm on the ball, recorded 21 touches, won four of his nine total duels, made four clearances, and maintained a 90% pass accuracy.

His eye-catching performance spells trouble for Radu Dragusin, who already finds himself behind Romero, Danso, Micky van de Ven, and Ben Davies in the pecking order.

With Byfield proving he can step up when required, Dragusin may become surplus to requirements.
