Lucas Bergvall ready to step up for no. 10 role at Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall believes he can step up to the plate in the absence of James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski.

Both attackers are out of action for a considerable period, leaving Spurs light in the no. 10 position.

Bergvall believes he can fill the gap for Spurs. The Swede and Pape Matar Sarr should be operating deeper, but new boss Thomas Frank has had to rely on the pair as number 10s.

“I’m just going to play in whatever position Thomas wants me to play, doesn’t matter if it’s six, eight or a ten. I’ll play there and do my best,” Bergvall said (via Football London).

“Of course, there’s a difference (between the roles). You’re further up the pitch. When you’re a six, you have to come out to get the ball more, be more in the build-up.

“When you’re a ten, you need to have some magic and come into the box and score goals and assist.”

“I feel like I can do a good job there. Maybe I’m not a typical 10, but with Madders and Kulu injured, maybe I need to step up.”

Hailed as an ‘intelligent footballer’ by former Tottenham star and fellow Swede, Erik Edman, Bergvall can deliver the goods as a playmaker.

Tottenham need to sign a new number 10 soon

However, Bergvall should be playing in his more natural box-to-box role, not trying to fill in between the lines.

Tottenham cannot afford to head into this new campaign without a natural playmaker and must start making moves to sign one.

Leicester City ace Bilal El Khannouss should be on Spurs’ shortlist after impressing in his short stint in the top flight last term.

The Belgium-born attacking midfielder/winger fits the mould of what the Tottenham roster is crying out for.

His numbers are not outstanding, but the raw tools to become an exciting Premier League playmaker are there. Tottenham should consider a move for El Khannouss.
