Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt another massive injury blow, with midfielder Lucas Bergvall set to spend time on the sidelines after suffering a high ankle sprain.
According to The Athletic, Spurs are still assessing Bergvall’s injury to determine the timescale, but the youngster is expected to spend plenty of time in the infirmary.
The setback comes at a difficult moment for Spurs, who are already struggling with a long list of absentees and growing concerns in midfield.
The 19-year-old was injured during Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Borussia Dortmund.
Bergvall had been on the pitch for just over an hour when a heavy tackle forced him off, cutting short what had been another promising outing.
He was replaced by Jun’ai Byfield, who marked the occasion with an exceptional performance in his senior debut for the club.
Speaking after the game, head coach Thomas Frank admitted the early signs were worrying.
“Unfortunately, Lucas picked up an ankle injury,” Frank said. “He keeps being very unlucky with injuries, and it looks like it could be a longer one.
“He is being assessed for these two days, on the timeframe we will know more about it in the next couple of days.”
Tottenham can’t catch a break with injury woes
Tottenham can’t seem to catch a break, with Bergvall’s setback the latest in a long line of injury woes that have plagued the North Londoners this season.
It’s also the latest disruption in what has been a stop-start period for Bergvall.
In November, he missed three matches after suffering a concussion, and more recently, he was sidelined for games against Brentford and Aston Villa due to another fitness issue.
He only just returned from a groin issue, but is now set to face another spell of rehabilitation.
Bergvall’s setback comes after Rodrigo Bentancur went under the knife to correct a hamstring problem, which will keep him out for an extended period.
James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski are also recovering from knee operations, while Ben Davies, Richarlison, Mohammed Kudus and Joao Palhinha are all unavailable due to various injuries.
