There was a mixed start to life for new Tottenham loanees Marcus Edwards and Cameron Carter-Vickers after the pair departed Spurs for Championship clubs this week.
The United States international defender’s time at Sheffield United was cut short and Mauricio Pochettino subsequently organised to send the rising star to Ipswich Town.
Carter-Vickers went straight into the Tractor Boys’ starting XI for the clash against Bolton Wanderers on Saturday and played the full 90 minutes of a 1-1 draw.
Ipswich boss Mick McCarthy was full of praise for the Tottenham defender at the final whistle.
“Cameron did great,” he told the club’s official website.
“I saw him play for Sheffield United at Bolton. I liked him then and he will get better for us as well.”
Tottenham starlet Edwards has also been farmed out in a bid to aid his development, with the attacking midfielder set to spend the rest of the campaign with Norwich City.
While the Canaries were beaten 2-1 by Sheffield United on Saturday, the Spurs youngster did not play a role as he sat out the game with an injury.
“He (Edwards) came with some back problems,” Norwich manager Daniel Farke said of the Tottenham teenager, according to Football London.
“He trained with us, but he’s not 100% comfortable because of his back.
“I was thinking of bringing him into the squad, but because he’s not 100% comfortable we won’t involve him.
“Without a midweek game for a while we have time to make sure he’s at 100% before bringing him into the squad.”
Tottenham’s youth academy has been the source of new players over the last few years, with the likes of Harry Kane, Andros Townsend and Harry Winks coming through the ranks and into the first team.
While Pochettino has recently admitted that it is harder for younger players to make the step up today given the quality of the current Spurs squad, Carter-Vickers and Edwards are two of the brighter prospects.
It is reassuring to see the Tottenham defender get a full 90 minutes for Ipswich straight away, as this luxury was not always available to him at Sheffield United.
Meanwhile, Norwich are a man short in attack after selling former Spurs attacker Alex Pritchard to Huddersfield Town and as such Edwards will hopefully be an important member of their squad for the remainder of the campaign.
I fear for Marcus Edwards. His slight physical appearance may not ever be strong enough to compete in the PL. He is having all sorts of problems with his strength conditioning, injuries, including now his back? It does not bode well for him. We may be looking at a body that has a very slow maturity rate. Marcus, at best, may not be ready for the PL for another 4-5 years. His development is going to be a long slow process. If his mental fitness is as slow to mature as his physical fitness his footballing career may be short lived. Edwards’ commitment and determination will decide his fate. With the support of Tottenham Hotspur FC, he couldn’t be in a better place. The rest is up to him. Be patient Marcus. We’re behind you all the way.
that’s retarded. look at manchester city and how physically strong their players are while they dominate the league. no more strong than edwards. he’s ready for epl now. and this loan is a stupid move because he’s the type of player that would play much better thrown straight into a quality team. just like how if you put messi in 2nd division england he’d look worse
Just read your reply Glen. My comments are not retarded. MC’s first team would steam roll Edwards. Most of our PL team players could out muscle Edwards and cause him constant injuries. We want him long term not just for a game. Stay calm Glen. Let Edwards learn from the lower league competition and allow his place on Spurs starting line up be his motivation.
if anything he’s just going to get injured in the lower divisions. should messi have been loaned to lower divisions? no, for some players it doesn’t make sense. edwards doesn’t need to become more physical, he’s not going to, he’s small, he could easily jump straight into our first team because he’s good enough, let him play in our first team, that’s where he’ll be most protected, and if he gets fouled playing for the tottenham first team at least it will mean something cuz he’ll earn freekicks and penalties for tottenham and not risk injury so that norwich can have freekicks and penalties, pussy europeans need to stop being so calm, enjoy sharia
