Mourinho states when Reguilon will likely make Tottenham debut

Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has stated that new signing Sergio Reguilon will not feature in tonight’s Carabao Cup clash against Leyton Orient – but could play in one of the club’s next two games.

Spurs have splashed the cash to bring the highly rated Spanish left-back to North London, with the supporters excited to see the new man in a Lilywhites shirt.

Tottenham are back in action against Orient on Tuesday night, but Reguilon will not be included in the matchday squad.

However, Mourinho has confirmed that the Premier League fixture against Newcastle on Sunday could be a possible debut occasion for the defender.

“You ask me about Sergio and I think Sergio will be quite quick,” the Spurs boss told Football London

“He is in the best period of his recovery.

“He’s training today (on Sunday while Spurs played at Southampton) with one of my assistants. He cannot play on Tuesday but I would say he will be available for us maybe for the end of the week.”

Tottenham were short of options at left-back after the summer exit of Jan Vertonghen and it is widely expected that Reguilon will usurp Ben Davies to be first choice in the position.

The 23-year-old showcased sizzling form at Sevilla last season, with the Spurs man playing a key role in the side’s Europa League triumph and fourth-placed La Liga finish.

With Reguilon an attack-minded full-back, there is a train of thought that Tottenham could revert to a three-man defence to accommodate him as a wing-back.
