Excitement among the Tottenham Hotspur fans has reached fever pitch in recent days, with The Guardian stating that Gareth Bale and Sergio Reguilon will travel to London on Friday to complete moves to the Premier League club.
While the news will surely be welcomed by the supporters and the squad, one Spurs man must be scratching his head over the news.
Tottenham shelled out £25.4 million to sign Steven Bergwijn from PSV Eindhoven in the January transfer window, with the young Dutch winger tipped to become a real star in the Premier League.
The initial signs have been good, with the Spurs attacker scoring stunning goals against both Manchester City and Manchester United in his first six months at the club.
However, with Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho already preferring Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura on the flanks, the potential arrival of Bale will push Bergwijn down the pecking order even further.
Spurs have no shortage of options in the wide attacking areas, with Erik Lamela, Ryan Sessegnon and even Moussa Sissoko all able to be deployed in these positions too.
While there is no doubt that the potential signing of Bale is too good for Tottenham to turn down, the former hero’s return will certainly blunt Bergwijn’s development and limit his opportunities to play in 2020-21.
