Opinion: Electric Tottenham attacker set to be PL’s breakout star in 2020-21

Looking at the Tottenham Hotspur attack, there is no shortage of options in the attacking midfield or winger berths – and Jose Mourinho needs to find the right dynamic to get the best from this unit.

While Harry Kane is guaranteed to lead the Spurs line, the remaining two-or-three attacking positions will have the likes of Son Heung-min, Dele Alli, Lucas Moura, Erik Lamela, Giovani Lo Celso, Gedson Fernandes and Moussa Sissoko fighting for a starting place.

However, one player that can have a big impact for Tottenham in 2020-21 and be the Premier League’s breakout star if given enough opportunities is Steven Bergwijn.

The Netherlands international joined Spurs from PSV Eindhoven in January and was not expected to make much of an immediate impression given the new environment, team and country he needed to adapt to.

However, Bergwijn impressed the Tottenham fans with his willingness to run at opponents, work rate and output – scoring a respectable three Premier League goals in 14 appearances.

Frustrating injury niggles also prevented the 22-year-old from building momentum, but his goal in the 2-0 win over Manchester City was a key indicator of what the new man is capable of.

While Bergwijn has plenty of competition for a starting place in the Tottenham team, if he is given consistent opportunities and can find his feet, the young winger could well be a really important player for Mourinho’s side.
