Opinion: Finally, Tottenham linked with excellent potential £12m signing

Transfer season always sees Tottenham linked with countless players, with very few of the rumours turning into actual new signings for the club.

While the media rumblings range from the sublime to the ridiculous, I was encouraged today to see a reliable source touting what would be a shrewd and considered new addition for Spurs.

Sky Sports suggest Tottenham are interested in securing a deal for Wolves right-back Matt Doherty this summer, with any potential deal set to cost the club a fee in the £12 million range.

Given the 28-year-old’s performances in an enterprising Wolves side team last season, landing the forward-thinking full-back would be a great piece of business by Spurs.

The jury is still firmly out on Serge Aurier, who may yet leave Tottenham this summer, while other credible options at right-back remain thin on the ground.

Doherty is a dogged defender who impressed in a Wolves rearguard that conceded fewer goals than Spurs and Chelsea last season – landing him would be a defensive upgrade on the current right-back crop.

However, the main positive of Tottenham signing the 28-year-old would be his attacking prowess, with the wideman excellent on the ball and able to contribute pinpoint delivery from attacking positions.

A fee in the £12 million range is more than fair for a player of Doherty’s ability and standing – let’s hope the rumour is true and Spurs proceed with an attempt to land the defender in the next fortnight.
