Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho is ready to allow rising star Ryan Sessegnon join Bundesliga side Hoffenheim on a season-long loan, according to Sky Sports.
The former Fulham man has struggled to settle at Spurs after a big-money move last summer and has not been given many opportunities to play by the current Lilywhites coach.
With Tottenham splashing the cash to sign Sergio Reguilon from Real Madrid, Sessegnon looks surplus to requirements currently and as such a loan exit is on the cards.
While the arrival of the Spaniard certainly will be another obstacle between Sessegnon and first-team football at Spurs, Mourinho could be making a mistake by letting him leave for the campaign.
Reguilon works best as a wing-back, rather than full-back, and with Tottenham also signing attack-minded Matt Doherty on the right, it looks as though the side will field a three-man defence in a 3-5-2/3-4-3 formation – with the two new men working as wing-backs.
Like Reguilon, Sessegnon has also showed his best form when operating as a wing-back rather than part of a back four and as such would be an excellent alternative at left wing-back to the Spaniard as fixtures pile up.
Having the rising English star available to play a role in cup or European games in that position would aid his development while providing Mourinho with a good athletic attacking option on the Tottenham left flank.
While Ben Davies can operate in that role and is likely going to be Reguilon’s deputy if Sessegnon departs, the Welsh defender would be better used as a back-up centre-half in a three-man defence.
