Opinion: Tottenham exit off the cards, wideman has won Mourinho over

Tottenham Hotspur’s excellent 6-1 win over Manchester United on Sunday was full of star performances, with Son Heung-min and Harry Kane dominating the headlines in the aftermath of the amazing win.

However, one of the unsung heroes that impressed in the Spurs win was Serge Aurier.

The Ivorian defender has blown hot and cold during his time at Tottenham, with the former PSG man certainly capable of mistakes and frustrating the supporters in the process.

With Spurs signing Matt Doherty over the summer and the Irishman set to be first-choice at right-back or right wing-back, speculation over Aurier’s future has rumbled on throughout the current window.

However, with the transfer deadline set to pass at 11pm on Monday night, it would now be a surprise to see the Tottenham full-back leave.

Jose Mourinho trusted Aurier to start at Old Trafford, playing him ahead of Doherty, who played against Maccabi Haifa on Thursday night.

With plenty of games banking up, four competitions to play in and the need for strength in depth, Tottenham look like they are going to need the African wideman.

Aurier’s main strength, as shown against United, is his desire to get forward and contribute in an attacking sense for Spurs.

With the potential to change formations, the ex-PSG man will also be an attacking weapon when Tottenham play with wing-backs.

After plenty of speculation, it looks as though Aurier has won Mourinho over and can contribute to Spurs’ progression this season.
