Opinion: Tottenham fringe man excels vs Ipswich, looks ready for big season

Tottenham Hotspur dispatched Ipswich Town 3-0 on Saturday afternoon, with fringe man Ryan Sessegnon getting a start in the game and opening the scoring after just six minutes.

The former Fulham man’s future has been discussed at length this summer in the media, but it appears that Spurs will be keeping the promising star in North London, despite interest in a loan deal for the 20-year-old.

While it is difficult to take too much away from the first pre-season game of the campaign, Sessegnon put in an impressive performance for Tottenham and looked like one of the side’s sharpest players.

The rising star clearly has unbelievable potential and raw talent, but needs more first-team football opportunities to develop into the player he is capable of becoming at Spurs.

The versatile left-back or left winger only played in six Premier League games in his first 12 months at the club but was impressive in the more-advanced role against the Tractor Boys.

Sessegnon’s athleticism has been one the standout elements of his game in recent seasons and the youngster looked stronger and more fleet-footed in the Tottenham win over Ipswich on Saturday – while taking his goal well.

If the England under-21 star can add a final product and more consistency to his performances, Spurs could well have a superstar on their hands in 2020-21.

Here’s hoping Sessegnon is given plenty of minutes in the club’s remaining friendlies against Reading and Birmingham City, before the Premier League opener against Everton in three weeks’ time.
