Opinion: Tottenham have slipped up by not signing £20m PL striker

Tottenham Hotspur have four competitions to play in this season and currently only one recognised centre forward in the form of Harry Kane.

As such, plenty of names are being mentioned as possible transfer targets for Spurs, while Jose Mourinho has been vocal in his desire for the club to add another number nine to his squad before October 5.

However, looking at the transfer business completed by other Premier League clubs this summer, Tottenham have surely missed a trick by not moving for Callum Wilson.

The England international was always going to be available after Bournemouth’s relegation from the Premier League and was duly snapped up by Newcastle United for a reasonable £20 million.

A proven goalscorer in the English top flight and someone who possesses all the footballing and physical attributes to lead the line for a Premier League side, Wilson appears perfect for Tottenham.

To sign someone of the required quality, Spurs are going to have to spend close to, or in excess of, the £20 million that Newcastle happily shelled out to land the striker.

Wilson could have been signed long before the new 2020-21 Premier League season kicked off, allowing him to bed in at Tottenham ahead of the competitive action starting.

He would have the chance to play regularly for Spurs – perhaps not as much as at Newcastle – but he would have joined a club supposedly fighting for honours and Champions League qualification.

Instead, it appears that Tottenham fans will be put through the familiar and painful ordeal of pushing towards transfer deadline day as Daniel Levy pursues a late deal.
