Opinion: Tough call, but time for Tottenham fan favourite to leave club

While no-one in football knows what the future holds due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Tottenham Hotspur supporters will have one eye on next season – regardless of 2019-20’s fate.

Jose Mourinho needs to overhaul the Spurs squad and bring fresh blood to North London for the club to get back to challenging for silverware.

Tottenham will inevitably also get rid of a number of the current squad in the next transfer window.

Jan Vertonghen’s contract is due to expire in June and while my heart says give him a new deal, my head states that the Belgian should be allowed to leave.

Super Jan has been an amazing servant for Tottenham and a player that was critical in the progression of the team under Mauricio Pochettino.

However, the Belgian defender looks to be past his best, with the veteran slowing down this season and certainly not his usual dependable self.

The Tottenham fans favourite turns 33 next month and in reality the side needs a more mobile and youthful option to compete with England’s top teams.

Vertonghen is one of the best players to have donned a Spurs shirt since the turn of the century and will always have a special place in the Tottenham supporters’ hearts.

But, with time catching up with us all, Super Jan’s time at the club looks over.
