Opinion: Why Jonathan David is perfect for Tottenham

Lille striker Jonathan David has rejected a move to AS Roma, according to L’Equipe, leaving Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign the former Gent centre-forward, who is entering the final year of his contract with the French club.

Spurs must move quickly and secure a cut-price deal for David. The lightning-fast Lille forward would be a sensational addition to Ange Postecoglou’s squad.

The 24-year-old can lead the line but should come in to play back-up to a marquee signing in the number nine position. Spurs need depth, and he can strengthen the numbers in the frontline.

Tottenham’s attacking options are not the most convincing. Richarlison managed 11 goals last term, but his inconsistency is hard to stomach, and with Saudi Pro League interest, he might be off to the Middle East.

Tottenham extended Timo Werner’s loan, but his record has been awful since switching RB Leipzig for north London, netting only two goals.

David’s arrival would provide crucial depth and competition, pushing the existing forwards to elevate their game.

The Canadian international has proven his ability in Ligue 1, consistently delivering impressive goal returns. Last term, he bagged 19 goals and four assists in 34 appearances.

In his first season on French soil, he scored 13 goals to spearhead Lille to the league title alongside the legendary Burak Yilmaz.

The Brooklyn-born star is a 54-cap international with 28 goals and led his nation to the 2022 World Cup, even though his performances at the tournament attracted criticism.

With Tottenham eager to strengthen their squad, David’s availability presents a golden opportunity.

His pace, finishing, and versatility make him a compelling prospect. While a marquee signing may be the initial focus, securing a player of David’s calibre as a squad player could be a wise move for Tottenham.

Ultimately, the decision rests with Postecoglou. However, the evidence suggests that David could be one of the missing pieces in Tottenham’s attacking puzzle.
