Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino will sit down with Toby Alderweireld next week to discuss the world-class defender’s future at the club, according to Sky Sports.
The Belgium international has been on the fringes of the Spurs first team since returning from a long-term hamstring injury but the belief on the terraces is that the defender is being frozen out by the head coach.
Alderweireld’s contract at Tottenham in getting closer to completion and as yet the former Southampton enforcer has not extended terms with the North London side.
In scenes reminiscent of Kyle Walker’s final few months at Spurs, the centre-half has had to watch on from the sidelines as Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez are preferred to him.
Sky Sports quote Pochettino stating that Tottenham’s plans for next season, which include Alderweireld, will become clearer next week.
For Spurs fans, there is one ideal outcome – that both the manager and the top-drawer defender commit to the club.
In reality, with the world’s biggest and wealthiest teams reported to covet Alderweireld, the Belgian can earn more elsewhere.
It is time for Daniel Levy to break Tottenham’s wage structure to keep the club’s best players in North London, regardless of the cost of a new stadium being there to pay off.
Should Alderweireld be sold, it would surely be massively demoralising for the rest of the squad.
