Timo Werner’s future at Tottenham Hotspur has been subject to intense speculation over the past couple of weeks, with the summer transfer window fast approaching.
The 28-year-old has enjoyed a fairly successful spell at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium since joining on a short-term loan from RB Leipzig in January.
Werner has contributed two goals and two assists in nine Premier League games and returned to Postecoglou’s starting XI for the sixth time during the 2-1 victory over Luton Town.
He replaced Brennan Johnson on the left flank but failed to affect the game in the final third despite remaining on the pitch for the entire 90 minutes, although he recorded three key passes.
Werner’s performance against Luton has once again sparked questions over his long-term future, but Postecoglou may have hinted at potentially retaining the services of the former Chelsea flop.
“In terms of his future, yeah I think like most players all these decisions will be made at the appropriate time. He’s been great for us,” the gaffer told reporters (via the club website).
“He was an important signing, and it’s fair to say he’s made an impact in every game.
“Yeah, he’d probably like a couple more goals, but at the same time he’s an important part of our structure, and I thought he was really good on the weekend.”
Should Spurs sign Werner on a permanent deal?
Spurs have an option to sign Werner on a permanent deal for around £15 million, but in our view, that money can be better spent elsewhere.
Son Heung-Min has shouldered the goalscoring burden admirably since Harry Kane’s departure, but it’s fair to say the South Korean is more effective on the left flank.
Richarlison has also sparked into life in recent weeks, but Spurs are still in the market for Kane’s successor, and we believe VfB Stuttgart’s Serhou Guirassy could be the perfect option.
The 28-year-old mirrors Kane’s output in every attacking facet, including chance creation, having returned 23 goals in 21 appearances for the Bundesliga side while creating ten big chances.
Guirassy has only missed seven games for Stuttgart due to injuries and has a release clause that makes him available for just £17m this summer.
Signing Guirassy would also allow Postecoglou to return Son to his more accomplished role on the left flank, and the duo could form a fearsome combination with Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison in the final third.
