Spurs ponder permanent move for Tel but are mulling over €55m buy clause

Tottenham Hotspur are pondering a permanent move for Bayern Munich loanee Mathys Tel but aren’t willing to activate their buy clause, Florian Plettenberg reports.

Tel was a highly sought-after prospect when Bayern put him up for grabs in January, but Tottenham won the race, fending off competition from Manchester United and Chelsea.

The 19-year-old arrived in North London with a glowing reputation as one of the brightest young talents in the continent despite scrapping for game time in Germany.

A loan move was supposed to help him recapture his prolific form, but so far, he has failed to repay the faith of the Tottenham top brass.

Tel has scored just twice in Spurs’ colours – the first came in an FA Cup fourth-round defeat against Aston Villa, two months before he finally opened his Premier League account with a penalty against relegated Southampton.

Despite struggling to hack it in the Premier League, Tel appears to have done enough to convince Spurs he’s worth getting on the books full-time.

Bayern have lost faith in the once-promising teenager and are eager to pawn him off to whichever club will have him.

Tottenham are willing to offer Tel an escape route but not at the fee negotiated in the player’s loan deal.

Spurs have an option to activate Tel’s buy clause, which is valued at around €50-55 million (£43-48m), but they want to negotiate fresh terms with Bayern.

Tel has been told he has no future at Bayern, but it remains to be seen if he’d fancy a permanent move to Spurs, considering they were never his first choice.

However, given the current trajectory of his loan spell, not many clubs are lining up at his door, so he may not be able to look further than Spurs if he wants to remain in the Premier League.

Nevertheless, whether or not Bayern are willing to renegotiate will determine just how desperate they are to rid themselves of the 19-year-old forward.
