Spurs should sign ‘hungry and ambitious’ Nathan Collins to replace Cristian Romero – View

Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero is a target for Atletico Madrid this summer, and he is reportedly open to switching clubs.

While Atletico Madrid are yet to come forward with an offer for the Spurs centre-half, the club has ample time to prepare for his departure.

Tottenham should be lining up another defensive addition to bolster the already solid group of senior centre-backs at the club, including Micky van de Ven, Kevin Danso, and Radu Dragusin.

Spurs should consider a swoop for Brentford ace Nathan Collins, in our opinion.

The 24-year-old was a trusted general for new Tottenham boss Thomas Frank at Brentford and can play a massive role under the Dane in North London.

Collins quietly put together one of the best defensive campaigns in the Premier League.

Per the Premier League website, he led the league in blocks with 57 this season.

He also won 63% of his aerial and 58% of his ground duels, a testament to his no-nonsense, commanding presence in the heart of defence.

Since arriving from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £23 million in 2023, he has been ever-present and consistent for Brentford.

Collins could bring some of the same aggressive qualities that make Romero such a fan favourite without the disciplinary baggage.

His ability to read the game, cover ground quickly, and dominate physically would make him an excellent addition to the Spurs backline.

If Romero does end up joining Diego Simeone in Madrid, Spurs would be wise to target a player familiar with Premier League intensity and with the manager’s expectations.

In that regard, Nathan Collins checks all the right boxes. Frank is also a fan of the Republic of Ireland international.

Frank praised him effusively when he signed, hailing him as ‘hungry and ambitious.

Spurs might have eyes on a player like Marc Guehi. However, with Arsenal, Liverpool, and Chelsea considering a move, he could prove difficult to pull to North London.

None of the top Premier League clubs are sniffing around Collins right now, which makes him the perfect target.
