Tottenham defender Destiny Udogie has been dealing with injuries and setbacks, but started his first game of the season as Brighton & Hove Albion held Spurs to a 2-2 draw.
The Tottenham left-back has made three substitute appearances for the Lilywhites this season, with Djed Spence nailing down the starting berth.
However, Udogie got a chance to start for Spurs and made the most of the opportunity with a fantastic showing versus Brighton.
Udogie made one clearance, one interception, and won three of his eight duels. He completed 2/4 long balls, was fouled once, and was a constant outlet, recording 87 touches.
The 22-year-old was a force down the left flank and impressed manager Thomas Frank. The Danish tactician praised his showing.
Frank said (via Football London): “Exceptional. He was exceptional today. He was unstoppable, almost, going forward.
“And I think also it was a bit unfortunate, it was Wilson who had to track him on the situation, because it was a little bit of a high-pressure situation, the Brighton wonder goal.
“But he just completely took him out going forward. Very good, just top.”
Frank also reiterated the importance of managing Udogie’s minutes, considering the number of games ahead this season.
Tottenham supporters will have been encouraged by Udogie’s display, but the key now is ensuring he stays fit.
When healthy, he is among the best full-backs in the Premier League, offering Spurs a powerful outlet on the left.
His energy, drive, and technical quality transform the team, but his recent setbacks underline the need for careful management.
Spence has shown he can step up, and giving him more minutes would ease the load on Udogie.
If Spurs can balance their options wisely, fans will hope Udogie remains fit and firing throughout the campaign. He is an excellent asset on that left-hand side.
