Time for Tottenham to trust Ben Davies

With Tottenham Hotspur back in Premier League action on Saturday against Middlesbrough, Mauricio Pochettino has a number of selection decisions to make.

Injuries to Jan Vertonghen and Danny Rose have left the London club slightly short at the back and will surely force the Argentine trainer into using a back four against Aitor Karanka’s men.

As such, it will be a straight decision for Pochettino whether to pick Kevin Wimmer or Ben Davies at left-back.

While the Austrian has deputised in the full-back role and also stepped in while Vertonghen has been out at centre-half, the former Swansea City defender deserves the chance to play.

Not many teams in the Premier League have back-up full-backs of the calibre of Davies and Kieran Trippier, with both performing admirably when given the chance to play for Spurs.

Davies gave up regular football at Swansea knowing that this would not be guaranteed at White Hart Lane, but the Wales international has not let the North London team down when called upon.

Although Rose has been in excellent form this season and possibly been the best left-back in the Premier League, his absence is nullified by the Welshman’s presence.

Davies is an ardent defender first and foremost, and while he may not have the same devastating ability on the front foot as the man he will replace, his work-rate is second to none.

As such, he should get the nod over Wimmer to start for Tottenham today, with the White Hart Lane faithful surely giving him their support and trust.
