Tottenham agree £65 million deal to sign Dominic Solanke

Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a deal with AFC Bournemouth to sign striker Dominic Solanke for £65 million, according to the Daily Mail. He will undergo medicals before completing the move.

The 26-year-old England forward enjoyed a prolific season with the Cherries, netting 19 Premier League goals, and his performances caught the eye of Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou.

Solanke was identified as Postecoglou’s primary target this summer and is desperate to move to north London.

The Cherries had their star forward tied down on a deal that runs till 2029, and there was a £65m release clause in his contract, which Tottenham have now activated.

The final fee is expected to be slightly lower than the release clause, but it will still represent a club-record sale for Bournemouth.

Tottenham haven’t bolstered their striking options since Harry Kane’s blockbuster move to Bayern Munich last year.

Postecoglou has been vocal about acquiring a number nine who complements his playing style, and Solanke’s profile perfectly fits the bill.

“The type of striker we get is crucial,” Postecoglou stated during Tottenham’s pre-season tour in Japan (via The Athletic).

“Our style demands specific qualities, both physically and technically. We need someone who fits that mould.”

“Striker is arguably the area where our squad is thinnest,” he continued. “So naturally, it’s a major focus for us.”

Is £65m too steep a price for Solanke?

Solanke’s 19-goal haul last season is impressive, but it is worth noting that this is his first double-digit Premier League campaign. His previous top-flight seasons yielded far less.

His Championship scoring records are commendable, but the step up to consistent Premier League performance is significant.

£65m might be a risk for a player yet to consistently prove himself at the highest level. Tottenham fans will only hope he can replicate his form and justify the hefty price tag.
