Tottenham captain Cristian Romero linked with summer move to Real Madrid

Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Cristian Romero could be on the move this summer, with reports claiming that he is on the radar of Real Madrid.

According to Spanish news outlet Mundo Deportivo, the La Liga powerhouse is preparing to offer the Tottenham captain an eye-catching escape route from North London.

The 27-year-old has been vocal about his desire to play in Spain and was previously linked with a big-money move to Atletico Madrid.

Romero is believed to be unsettled in North London, despite signing a new contract in August last year that keeps him tied to Tottenham until the summer of 2029.

The World Cup winner has not hidden his frustration in recent months, and his public comments have raised fresh questions about his long-term future at Spurs.

Now, one of Europe’s biggest clubs appears ready to take advantage, with Madrid adding Romero to their shortlist of defensive targets ahead of the summer transfer window.

Romero could leave Tottenham next summer

Madrid are said to be monitoring Romero’s situation closely, especially after the Argentine openly criticised Tottenham’s transfer activity during the winter window.

Romero’s social media post after Spurs’ draw with Manchester City caused a stir among supporters.

While praising his team-mates for their effort, he pointed out that the squad had only 11 players available for selection and described the situation as “unbelievable” and “disgraceful”.

His comments were seen as a direct dig at the club hierarchy, sparking further speculation about his future at the club.

Romero has been one of Tottenham’s most important and influential players since joining from Atalanta.

The Argentine has built a reputation as a fearless and aggressive defender. However, his competitive edge has sometimes crossed the line.

His recent red card against Manchester United for a reckless challenge on Casemiro only added to the tension surrounding him.

The dismissal means he will serve a four-match suspension, which started with the 2-1 Premier League home defeat against Newcastle United.

Romero could follow Thomas Frank through the Tottenham exit, with the Danish manager dismissed following a string of abysmal performances and results.

Atletico could rival Madrid for his signature next summer, but Barcelona are also rumoured to be monitoring the player’s situation closely.
