Tottenham Hotspur left-back Joao Souza is set to complete a season-long loan move to Portuguese giants FC Porto for the remainder of the 2026/27 campaign, according to O Jogo.
The 20-year-old Brazilian defender has been given permission by Spurs to travel to Portugal for a medical and to finalise his contract before the summer transfer window closes.
Negotiations between the two clubs concluded swiftly, with FC Porto agreeing to a straight loan deal until June 2027.
Porto will cover Souza’s salary for the duration of his stay, and the agreement includes no option or obligation to buy, ensuring Tottenham retain full control over his long-term future.
This move provides an ideal platform for Souza’s continued development. The highly rated full-back joined Spurs from Santos in January 2026 for €15 million, signing a long-term contract until June 2031. However, he found first-team opportunities limited during his first six months in England, making just four league appearances for the Lilywhites.
Porto acted swiftly to secure Souza’s services after the club needed to reinforce the left flank following Zaidu Sanusi’s recent adductor injury, which will rule him out for around two months.
The reigning Primeira Liga champions beat out competition from Benfica, who were also keen to sign Souza.
For Souza, a move to a Portuguese-speaking environment should ease cultural adaptation and provide valuable regular playing time.
Tottenham still regard the former Brazil youth international as an important long-term asset.
The loan spell at the Estadio do Dragao is intended to accelerate his physical and tactical development in top-tier European football before he returns to North London for the 2027/28 season.
