Manchester United have officially confirmed the signing of 18-year-old winger Tynan Thompson from Tottenham Hotspur.
The highly rated attacker, who tallied 12 goals and seven assists at youth level last season, requested a move due to personal family circumstances. However, his departure has cast a harsh spotlight on Tottenham’s youth retention policy.
With Thompson departing, a potential exodus of prized young talent looms over Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer. Foremost among them is Lucas Bergvall, who has officially informed Spurs of his desire to leave.
Despite being named the Supporters’ Player of the Season for 2024/25, the 20-year-old midfielder, who is ‘one of Sweden’s greatest talents’, has become disillusioned with his limited path to first-team minutes under Roberto De Zerbi, which has been further complicated by the high-profile signings of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes.
Faced with Bergvall’s desire to leave, Tottenham are now prepared to sell but only on their own terms. They have already rejected a £38 million opening bid from Nottingham Forest and a substantial £46 million approach from Newcastle United.
The Magpies have identified the Swedish midfielder as an elite alternative after missing out on other targets, but Spurs are holding firm for a fee in excess of £50 million.
Alongside the domestic interest from Newcastle and Forest, several continental heavyweights are closely monitoring the situation. Barcelona, who pushed hard to sign Bergvall before he joined Spurs in 2024, have maintained intermittent interest.
With the Tynan Thompson deal showing that Tottenham’s youth core is accessible at the right price, a bidding war for Bergvall could accelerate rapidly in the coming days.
