Tottenham Hotspur drew 2-2 with Barcelona in the club’s latest pre-season friendly in the US, with Spurs beaten 5-3 on penalties after the final whistle.
While a host of the club’s main players have not travelled for the tour after their exploits in the World Cup, the games in America have allowed Mauricio Pochettino the chance to field fringe and young players.
One of those to get an opportunity in recent times has been Anthony Georgiou, with the Tottenham man coming off the bench against Barcelona on Sunday.
The versatile 21-year-old is highly rated at the club and is being tipped to follow in the footsteps of a host of other graduates of the youth system and become a first-team star.
Georgiou was unlucky against Barcelona, with the Tottenham youngster the man to miss the decisive spot kick and grant the Catalans victory on penalties.
Despite this, the Spurs fans have been full of praise for the Cyprus international’s performance on Twitter, with the supporters excited about the prospect of the Lewisham-born man’s potential.
With pace to burn, a positive attitude and composure on the ball, Tottenham could well have a real star of the future on their hands – but a potential loan stint in the Football League in 2018-19 seems like the next step in his evolution.
The Spurs fans praised Georgiou on Twitter after the Barcelona game – here are the best tweets.
Head up @_Ant_georgiou, you played very well! Keep it up mate! #COYS

Woke up to see both Spurs goals & the shoot out. Despite having his penalty saved, it’s great to see @_Ant_georgiou step up to take one after he & Oliver Skipp had played well. The future looks bright 👍🏻 #COYS #BARTOT #ICC2018

Skipp looked ahead of Amos to me and with more potential – one or both might be starting at Newcastle now Wanyama and Sissoko are injured. Georgiou lively and made a difference when came on

Sissoko injured is a blessing. Hopefully some of the young players will get a chance now. Skipp is so good. And I granted I have only seen Georgiou in pre season games but he looks decent. Why is KWP always played out of position. Who is George Marsh?

@WindyCOYS Amos and Skipp are future stars – immense talent. What are your thoughts Windy? For the 2nd straight US tour Georgiou also showed his amazing skill. pic.twitter.com/vcF7YIqXun
