Talks between the two clubs initially centred on Tottenham right-back Djed Spence. Inter Milan have shown a strong desire to sign Spence, who has enjoyed an impressive summer with England on their run to the World Cup semi-finals in North America.
However, during discussions over the terms of a deal for the full-back, Tottenham unexpectedly offered Romero as part of the discussions.
Spurs’ openness to discuss the departure of their 28-year-old vice-captain is not entirely surprising given recent squad changes.
Romero, who is valued at £38.4m, has long been regarded as the anchor of Tottenham’s defence, but following a £52 million deal for Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke and the arrival of Marcos Senesi, along with Micky van de Ven and Kevin Danso also in the squad, the Tottenham hierarchy are open to selling Romero for the right price.
For Inter Milan, the prospect of signing an elite centre-back like Romero is highly appealing. However, completing the deal poses a significant financial challenge.
The Nerazzurri have expressed interest, but the combined cost of Tottenham’s valuation and Romero’s substantial wage demands is considered prohibitive.
Complicating matters further is a strong interest from Spain. La Liga giants Barcelona are also admirers of Romero and are closely monitoring the situation in London, ready to rival Inter should the Italian club fail to make a breakthrough in their pursuit.
