Roberto De Zerbi’s summer transformation of Tottenham Hotspur is gathering momentum, and Spurs have reportedly submitted a bid for Manchester City winger Savinho, with the 22-year-old ready to make the move to north London.
City informed Savinho earlier this month that he is free to leave, with the winger having been unable to secure a regular starting role despite signing a contract extension until 2031 just 12 months ago. The paradox of a player contracted to 2031 yet available for sale reflects the uncomfortable reality of Savinho’s standing at the Etihad Stadium following a campaign in which he managed just five goals and three assists in 39 games across all competitions.
Savinho posted an image of himself training on his Instagram stories, and Xavi Simons subsequently shared a throwback photograph of himself and Savinho together from their time at PSV Eindhoven, fuelling speculation that a reunion is imminent.
De Zerbi has given his full and enthusiastic blessing for the deal, as the Italian head coach seeks to upgrade his attacking options. Savinho’s pace, directness and ability to thrive in one-versus-one situations make him ideally suited to De Zerbi’s high-octane, possession-based system.
Tottenham twice bid for the ‘unstoppable’ Savinho last summer, with their largest offer reported at €80 million — a figure that, had it been accepted, would have made him their all-time record signing. This summer, with City motivated to sell and the fee significantly reduced, the deal that eluded Spurs twelve months ago is finally within reach.
