Tottenham interested in Borussia Dortmund head coach Niko Kovac

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou will reportedly leave the club this summer, even if he wins the Europa League and secures UEFA Champions League football.

The less said about the woeful 2024/25 season, the better. Spurs have already lost 18 Premier League matches, and there are still five games to go. It can get worse.

The bulk of the blame lies with the Australian tactician, even though the Tottenham hierarchy should also share a large portion.

Tottenham are ready to part ways with Postecoglou and have started sifting through options.

Marco Silva, Andoni Iraola, and Thomas Frank are reportedly on their shortlist, but yesterday, Bild claimed that Spurs have been keeping a close eye on Borussia Dortmund gaffer Niko Kovac.

Per the report, Tottenham have enquired about his services. The Berlin-born former Croatian international is also open to working in England. It is a personal career dream for the 53-year-old.

Kovac will be open to Tottenham’s advances. He signed only an 18-month deal in January, allowing Spurs to pursue his signature.

Tottenham know Kovac from when he led Bayern Munich to a 7-2 mullering of Spurs in the UEFA Champions League. Die Rekordmeister sacked him, and he joined Monaco, Wolfsburg, and now Dortmund.

Kovac boasts vast experience and a noteworthy resume (four trophies from Bayern and Eintracht Frankfurt). Unsurprisingly, Tottenham have been sniffing the goods.

Spurs must steer clear of Kovac – opinion

If Tottenham are serious about a long-term rebuild, they must avoid Kovac. He might tick boxes on paper – experience and silverware, but his recent managerial track record tells a different story.

Kovac has underwhelmed ever since leaving Frankfurt in 2018. At Bayern Munich, he lost the dressing room and was shown the door despite winning the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal.

Monaco saw a brief promise turn into familiar inconsistency. Wolfsburg? The same story. Now at Borussia Dortmund, he’s won just eight of his first 16 games (D3, L5).

He tends to start brightly, but the momentum always fades. His teams lack an identity, and he has never shown the tactical adaptability needed at the top level over the long haul.

If Tottenham want to reset, they need a visionary, not a journeyman. The rebuild deserves better.
