It has been confirmed this week that Galatasaray winger Bruma is set to join Red Bull Leipzig over the summer, with his agent stating that terms on a move to the Bundesliga for his client are all-but agreed.
This brings an end to the continual transfer speculation linking the Portuguese attacker with Tottenham Hotspur, who have been rumoured to be major suitors over recent transfer windows.
There is no doubting that Bruma has plenty of potential and his showings in Turkey this season at times have been exhilarating.
However, Spurs must be very strategic with their signings this summer, especially when it comes to the foreign market.
The names of Roberto Soldado, Paulinho and countless others over the years are synonymous with failure, as recruits from overseas have had varied fortunes at the North London side.
While Bruma certainly had the potential to be an exciting addition, he is still a raw talent.
There is every chance that the Portuguese attacker could have followed down the same path as someone like Georges-Kevin N’Koudou in arriving at Spurs with plenty of potential but struggling to make an impact.
Although Mauricio Pochettino has a certain mould of player that he looks for when recruiting, Tottenham need to try and improve their starting XI this summer.
Would Bruma have commanded a place in the Spurs side that impressed so much in 2016-17?
Certainly not. As such, Tottenham have the tough task of attracting players that are established but fit in with Pochettino’s demands and the club’s wage structure.
While Bruma could have been a good signing, Spurs fans won’t lose any sleep over the fact that he is heading to Leipzig.
