Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly eyeing summer midfield additions after the Spurs top brass concluded that the engine room is not a priority for the January transfer window.
The Lilywhites have already started earmarking targets for later in the year, and one name floating about is Lille midfielder Angel Gomes.
The Telegraph confirmed Tottenham’s interest in bringing the player to north London but reiterated that he is being considered for a summer move.
However, in our opinion, Spurs should try to sign the former Manchester United central midfielder before the close of the winter transfer window.
Spurs desperately need a profile like Gomes in the centre of the park right now. The Lille man will bring control to the Tottenham engine room, which this team sorely lacks. He can dictate the pace of games with a twist and a turn. His passing is crisp. He can also slow it down when needed.
Manager Ange Postecoglou’s football thrives on a no-holds-barred approach. However, it is getting clearer that Tottenham need to better control games, especially in phases of the play where they are not attacking as viciously as they would like.
Even at the peak of Jurgen Klopp’s heavy metal football at Liverpool, he would move Jordan Henderson to the base of midfield and push Fabinho up as he sought more control in the engine room. Postecoglou needs to take a leaf from his book.
Also, with Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur constantly battling injuries and suspension, Spurs could use a helping hand in the second half of the season.
Additionally, Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma have been disappointing at crucial points in the season, and this team could use competition.
Gomes, who has four caps for England, would give Tottenham more options in the centre and added creativity from the base of midfield.
Lastly, Tottenham can avoid the long queue of clubs waiting for him next summer when his contract expires. West Ham United and Brighton & Hove Albion have been credited with an interest in Gomes, but Spurs can pip them to his signature if they swoop now.
