Tottenham release six youngsters – Lesniak a surprise inclusion

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed on the official website that six young players have been released from the club at the culmination of the 21-6-17 campaign.

Filip Lesniak, Tom McDermott, Joe Muscatt, Charlie Owens, Zenon Stylianides and Juan Pablo Gonzalez-Velasco have all been told that their futures are away from the North London side and  have been wished well in their future endeavours.

While the news will not overly shock the Spurs support, Lesniak’s departure is slightly confusing given the 21-year-old’s breakthrough into the first team recently.

The Slovakian midfielder made his Premier League debut in the penultimate fixture of the 2016-17 campaign, coming off the bench in the 6-1 win over Leicester City.

While Lesniak may have only had four minutes on the King Power Stadium pitch, he provided an assist for Harry Kane to score his hat-trick.

Given that the youngster was deemed good enough for the matchday squad in a Premier League game against the reigning champions, the fact that his contract was not even extended for an extra 12 months comes as something of a surprise.

Competition for places in the Tottenham first team is certainly fierce, but hopefully Spurs will hope they don’t regret letting Lesniak leave as he looks like a young player with a bright future in the game.
