Tottenham Hotspur are assembling one of the most ambitious transfer windows in Premier League history.
Spurs have agreed an £85 million deal to bring Mateus Fernandes to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, beating out fierce competition from Manchester United.
Yet the North Londoners and manager Roberto De Zerbi are far from finished, with Tottenham still locked in negotiations with Newcastle United for Italian maestro Sandro Tonali, a deal that could shatter their transfer record for the second time in a week.
The acquisition of Fernandes represents a major coup for Tottenham. The 21-year-old Portuguese international became the subject of an intense bidding war after West Ham’s relegation to the Championship.
While Manchester United had long identified Fernandes as their priority summer target, their valuation fell short of the Hammers’ demands. Tottenham seized the opportunity, outbidding United with a guaranteed £85 million package.
The transfer comfortably eclipses Spurs’ previous record fee – the £65 million paid for Dominic Solanke in 2024. Fernandes is set to add creativity and ball progression to De Zerbi’s strengthened squad, following the signings of Jan Paul van Hecke, Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Martin Dubravka.
Even as Fernandes prepares for his medical, Tottenham’s recruitment team has shifted its focus to securing Sandro Tonali. De Zerbi is intent on revamping his central midfield, and the 26-year-old Italian is seen as a crucial addition.
Spurs have reportedly agreed personal terms on a six-year contract, but meeting Newcastle’s financial demands remains the final hurdle.
The Magpies have already rejected an initial proposal of around £80 million and are holding out for a package closer to £100 million.
If Tottenham match Newcastle’s valuation, they will have committed an astonishing £185 million to just two players. For a club historically associated with a more conservative fiscal approach, this level of spending represents a dramatic shift in philosophy.
