Tottenham to swoop for rising star – does he fit the Pochettino profile?

Reports in several English media outlets including The Sun suggest Tottenham Hotspur are about to swoop for Norwich City starlet Max Aarons, who has impressed in the Championship this season.

The teenage defender, who will turn 19 in early January, has yet to make 25 first-team appearances for the Canaries but has been part of the Carrow Road club’s push for promotion this term.

Aarons is predominantly a right-back but can also play on the opposite flank, in versatility that would surely appeal to Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Born in Hammersmith, West London, he started his career at Luton Town before switching to Norwich in 2016.

Aarons has since debuted for England under 19’s in September 2018, in a rapid rise from youth-team football.

The Norwich teenager only signed his first full professional contract in June and swiftly followed that with his debut in the EFL Cup against Stevenage in August.

Since then made the Canaries right-back berth his own with a string of exciting performances, which has already made him a fans favourite at Carrow Road.

The Sun state a host of other clubs are keeping a keen eye on young Aarons, with Tottenham and RB Leipzig at the front of the queue.

Norwich, who are challenging at the top of the Championship, are under no financial pressure to sell having offloaded James Maddison and Josh Murphy last summer for considerable fees.

The potential signing of Aarons fits the Tottenham philosophy of buying young, talented English players from the lower leagues and helping them reach their potential.

Though it still remains to be seen if Aarons will follow in Dele Alli’s footsteps and evolve from a rising star into an international star.
