Tottenham Hotspur play their first home game of the new season on Sunday when current Premier League champions and bitter rivals Chelsea travel to Wembley.
After getting the job done last weekend with a functional, if uninspiring, win over Newcastle United, Mauricio Pochettino will know that his side must lift their collective performance a number of levels this week to get the required result.
The game represents an ideal opportunity for Tottenham to set a number of points painstakingly straight.
With pundits writing Spurs off due to a lack of new faces this summer, the game against Chelsea is a glorious chance for the North London side to reiterate just how good we are.
Having put forward a Premier League title challenge in both of the last two seasons and playing some breathtaking football in the process, for Tottenham to be discounted from the perceived frontrunners this season is nothing short of insulting.
The opposition are a team that have traditionally had the edge over us in the Premier League era and defeats to Chelsea in recent campaigns in both the league and the cup have hurt.
However, with no Diego Costa, no Eden Hazard, no Cesc Fabregas and no Gary Cahill, Tottenham will never have a better chance than this to exact painstaking revenge.
A home defeat to Burnley also showcased the current fragility of a Chelsea side that has transitioned over summer months and as such Tottenham’s continuity should stand us in good stead to get a favourable result.
Finally, much has been made of Spurs shifting to Wembley for the campaign and how this will impact upon the team, both mentally and physically, given the bigger pitch.
While Tottenham’s recent record at the national stadium certainly is not good, especially compared to last season’s unbeaten campaign at White Hart Lane, a win today will dilute the feeling that playing in a new home will be a hindrance.
While Paul Merson and the rest of the know-it-all pundits are quick to write off Spurs due to the Wembley factor, victory over the current champions would shatter their pathetic arguments and remind English football just how good this team Pochettino has put together is.
