Tottenham’s first summer signing completed, Pochettino gets his man

Tottenham Hotspur have completed a deal to sign Colombian midfielder Wilmar Barrios after the World Cup, according to South American media outlet Antena 2.

Spurs have been linked with a host of new names over the last month, with Mauricio Pochettino expected to be handed transfer funds after agreeing to a new contract at the club.

The centre of midfield could well be an area where reinforcements are sought out by Tottenham, with speculation abound over the future of Mousa Dembele.

The Belgian has a year left on his current Spurs deal and the club may look to cash-in on him, especially with reported interest from Italy and China.

Barrios has been included in Colombia’s World Cup squad and could well play a role for the South Americans in Russia.

The 24-year-old defensive midfielder is on the books of Argentine side Boca Juniors and has starred for the Buenos Aires club over the last two years.

A combative and hard-working player, Barrios would join fellow Colombian Davinson Sanchez at Tottenham if a deal can be agreed.

Spurs fans will not know much about the South American and as such keeping a close eye on Colombia’s opening World Cup game against Japan on Tuesday will be a pre-requisite.

Should Dembele leave Tottenham this summer it will be a sad moment, as the Belgian has been an excellent servant of the club over the last six years.

His unique skillset will be hard to replace and as such Barrios, or whoever takes his place in Pochettino’s squad, would have big boots to fill.
