Tottenham’s transfer window: Ambition, investment and a new-look squad

Tottenham Hotspur’s summer transfer window was a bold, high-stakes overhaul designed to reshape the squad for manager Roberto De Zerbi.

Spurs addressed key squad needs across the board. The midfield was strengthened with the club-record £100 million signing of Sandro Tonali and the £85m arrival of Mateus Fernandes from West Ham.

Tottenham upgraded their threat in wide areas by bringing in Savinho from Manchester City for £75m and securing Omar Marmoush on loan with a future purchase obligation.

They filled defensive gaps with the £52m signing of Jan Paul van Hecke and smart free-agent additions in Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Martin Dubravka, adding proven top-flight leadership and depth.

The late double raid on London rivals Chelsea provided the missing pieces to De Zerbi’s tactical puzzle. Landing Tosin Adarabioyo for a bargain £11.7m added proven Premier League physicality, aerial dominance, and build-up composure.

At the same time, securing Mykhailo Mudryk on a season-long loan reunited the Ukrainian winger with his former Shakhtar Donetsk mentor.

Mudryk’s explosive speed and raw 1v1 skill give Spurs elite depth across the flank, offering a dynamic counter-attacking outlet without requiring immediate financial commitment.

Tottenham spent over £300m in guaranteed fees, making them one of Europe’s biggest spenders this summer. However, they balanced their record outlay with strong outgoing business, recouping over £130m in sales.

Selling teenage defender Luka Vuskovic to Brighton for £46m provided an immediate boost, while moving on Cristian Romero to Atletico Madrid (£34m) and Djed Spence to Inter Milan (£30m) helped clear surplus wages and squad space.

On value for money, Spurs paid premium fees for established stars like Sandro Tonali, but many would argue even that was an overpay, as was the cost of signing Fernandes, who was coming off a second relegation in two seasons.

While the sale of high-potential youngster Vuskovic raised some eyebrows, Tottenham clearly prioritised immediate top-four ambitions over long-term development.

De Zerbi’s recruitment strategy has given the squad valuable tactical flexibility. Adding battle-tested leaders alongside dynamic young talents gives Spurs the mental resilience and physical depth to navigate a demanding campaign.

Ultimately, De Zerbi has been backed with a star-studded, tactically flexible spine. Despite a heavy net spend, Tottenham have built a squad that can mount a genuine top-four challenge.
