Tottenham Hotspur fans on Twitter tore into midfielder Moussa Sissoko after his cameo appearance in the 2-0 Premier League victory over Watford on Monday night.
The win takes fourth-placed Spurs five points clear of rivals Chelsea in fifth and leaves them firmly in control in the battle for Champions League spots for next season.
However, it was not all plain sailing at Wembley as the Hornets spurned a number of decent opportunities to get on the score-sheet, finding Tottenham stalwart Hugo Lloris in top form between the sticks for the home side.
Dele Alli gave Tottenham the lead 16 minutes after kick-off when goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis spilled a routine catch, allowing Christian Eriksen to tee up the England man who fired into the unguarded net from 12 yards.
The scoreline remained the same up until the break, but shortly after the restart Harry Kane slotted home from Kieran Trippier’s cutback to ensure that all three points would stay in North London.
It was far from a vintage performance from Tottenham and Sissoko, despite only being introduced with less than 20 minutes to play, was one of the players who took the brunt of the criticism on social media.
The France international spurned a simple chance in the dying moments of the match when Kane found him with space in the area, only to send his effort high and wide of the target.
It was a display that summed up Sissoko’s time with Spurs, after two seasons that have yielded very little on the field.
Signed to add pace and power to the centre of the park, the former Newcastle United man has failed to hold down a regular place in the team and few fans would be surprised were he to be shown the exit door over the summer.
Tottenham now have their eyes firmly on catching third-placed Liverpool; Mauricio Pochettino’s men are a point behind the Reds with a game in hand and face a trip to bottom-of-the-table West Bromwich Albion at the weekend.
Meanwhile, the best of the reaction to Sissoko’s performance can be found below:
I thought sissoko was alright when he came on… Offered a bit more than dembele… For me he gets a real raw deal from alot of spurs fans…. He's not amazing but he's not as bad as dembele

I’m telling you, Sissoko has an appearance clause in his contract. Playing him over Lucas is extremely baffling😒 #COYS #THFC

I’ll help, why does Poch persist with Sissoko, he continues to prove to most people, excluding Poch, that he’s not a top 4 player, and that’s as kind as I can be in evaluating him, with a boot on my ole chap, id have got that chance he missed. Get shot.😡😡 https://t.co/rqz7xmf3AE

I'm no fan of Sissoko, but bringing him on last night was the correct sub. It was actually the perfect game for him. He was able to sure up the midfield as Watford looked dangerous. Lucas wouldn't have done that #COYS

Finally and I promise rant over , how does Sissoko get paid wages each and every week , he is average at best and the miss awful he adds nothing than being in the squad nothing at all #COYS

Overall a poor and miserable performance but we managed to get the 3pts and that’s the most important thing at this stage of the season. Plus, Sissoko has provided further evidence he’s a Pub Team player at best. Up the Spurs! COYS

If anyone tells me Sissoko has improved this season I will throw a potato at them😠 #THFC #COYS

Fortunately @SpursOfficial were up against a team tonight who didn’t want to be there.
Sissoko’s another nothing player.
He’s on £90k a week.
The club may as well pay that to you or me.#TOTWAT #THFC #COYS
